Events

  • Workshops: The final workshop schedule has been drawn up by Alix. IWW & Killer Coke have canceled, but Otesha and Jason Collard are in. The workshop schedule will be sent out to all Social. Most workshop blurbs have been submitted. Alix will email them to Carly & Steve to put on the website.

They are by donation (suggested $1.50)

CALL-OUT for ALTERNATIVE 101 WEEK VOLUNTEERS

For the third year, OPIRG-Ottawa is coordinating Alternative 101 week (Alt101), a welcome week to the University of Ottawa that focuses on the social justice and environmental aspects of the campus and the city. This weeklong affair includes daily vegan breakfast, a bike tour of the city, a trip to the Bytowne, and a night of Spins and Needles.

To make the week a success, and an inclusive, community-based welcome for new students, we are in need of volunteers. The energy is high in that first week of September; guides and participants have an amazing time, make new friends, start new projects, and revitalize as we head into a new shcoolyear. Don’t miss out! Below is a list of events and assocaited tasks. Please contact Steve (Alt101 Coodinator, gripocampus@gmail.com) if you see someting that tickles your fancy.

If it’s going to take some convincing, I’m prepared!

Perks of being a volunteer with Alt101:

  • You get to be right in the action! Enjoying the workshops (sex! bikes! yoga! ), activities (mustache party! Naomi Klein!), bike rides (yay! Bikes!), free food…and more, of course!

  • New people, great people! Expose incoming students to your projects and working groups! Find out what they are into! Coordinate, learn, build a stronger movement!

  • You get more and more involved at OPIRG! Next thing you know, you’ll be on stage during Social Theatre! There’s just no end to what you can do with OPIRG!

  • Free Food. Sometimes it takes some effort on your part to find, but there’s so much free food during 101 week…so much.

  • It’s an enriching experience. Ask any past participant, or guide. Most are back for a second or third go at the week. It’s worth your time & energy!

  • …also you get swing dance lessons. For free.

So, without further ado, I know you are getting antsy to see the list and sign up for the fun!

THE VOLUNTEER LIST!

(note: “Coordinator Needed!” means that we are looking for someone to take care of volunteers and logistics at this event.)

  1. Breakfast!

Yummy, vegan breakfast daily. We need help with cooking, washing & menu planning.

  2. Tablin’!

    Coordinator Needed!

We’ll have a table set up all week for recruiting & information. We need people to be at it, basically. Be there and be smiley and welcomng.

  3. Campus Tours

We have two tours, an eco-tour and an anti-corporate tour. We need guides, and people to help prepare the tours.

  4. DIY Bike Clinic

Help things run smoothly. Fix bikes with folks.

  5. Naomi Klein

    Promotions & Postering.

  6. Bike Tour

    Coordinator Needed!

We need the tour mapped out, a picnic planned, some games to play….the logistics need to be worked out. If you bike the city, and know a good short tour, and have some ideas to make it an unforgettable trip that keeps folks biking into the Fall, this option is for you!

  7. Bytowne

    Coordinator Needed!

A night at the moving picture show! Goody! To make the night go off without a hitch we need folks to pick up tickets, & guide people to the theatre.

  8. Gatineau Park

Yay Park! We’ll looking for picnic coordinators. And game players.

  9. Chill Space

    Coordinator Needed!

Sometimes people just need a break from all the excitement. Board game lovers, this is your place in Alt101. Games, snacks, music..Helping with the Chill Space is a great way to meet new people, have a great time, and not spend too much energy.

  10. Speaker

We’re excited to host Mohammed Ali & an American War Resister to Alt101. We are looking for folks to help coordinate food and music at the event on Wednesday the 5th.

  11. Community Tabling

This event is basically a bunch of tables with communtiy groups promoting their work and introducing themselves to new students. We need folks to set up tables in the morning on Thursday the 6th, and someone to be the most key volunteer – the generous gofer, who can do all the running around during the event, if need be.

  1. Workshops

We’re hosting 22 workshops on everything from sex to bike repair! Again, a volunteer gofer would be desirable. The workshops run all day Thursday and Friday.

  2. T-Shirt Altering

If you can operate a sewing machine, or have some fancy techniques in clothes alteration that you can share, please volunteer yourself to share your skills! The Alt101 t-shirt will be a momento of the week for every volunteer, guide and participant. Skills in making clothes beautiful will go a long way.

  3. Potluck

    Coordinator Needed!

Foody events take some extra effort. Organization skills fit really well. Plus you get to eat yummy food.

  4. Kicker

Mustraches and Swing Dancing! It shouldn’t take much to convince folks to help volunteer for this event, I should hope! Help with music and logistic coordination is needed.

  5. Promo

Alt101 need propaganda. We need posters and handbills to get folks to come out to the workshops and the speaker. So, if you can make posters, or put them up, inquire about options in promotions!

So, that’s the list! I hope you are revved up and ready to email Steve at gripocampus@gmail.com to inquire about volunteering with Alt101 2007! Don’t worry about asking questions, this email was brief in description to keep it short enough that folks will read down the this last paragraph.

Thanks for your help!
